US Puts Pressure on Spain to Enact Harsher Copyright Laws

By Sébastien ODDOS member of a.d.c.i. - Date : 2012-01-06 - Country : ESPAGNE - Subject : Regulations - IP Field : Copyright & neighbouring rights

We learn from Cory Doctorow on BB that "on the eve of the enactment of Spain's harsh new copyright law, the Spanish newspaper El Pais has published a leaked letter from the US Ambassador to the outgoing Spanish president ordering him to enact the copyright law America's industry wants to see, or face trade sanctions". This is an interesting piece of news which shows the kind of diplomacy and friendly pressures some countries may face within the framework of the WTO. If true, it would also reveal how high IP and copyright enforcement are on the current US agenda.
