Applications to the United States Patent and Trademark Office have risen about 4% this fiscal year, a sign the US economy is improving. It is medical, computer, biotechnology and nanotechnology inventions that have led the increase. The US PTO is also making efforts to streamline its procedures and reduce the 750,000 application backlog. One major issue is to what extent the US PTO will maintain the integrity of its examination process or if the new approach will lead to looser patentability criteria.
