Catherine Saez posted on IP Watch a summary of a recent United Nations conference on innovation-based competitiveness organised by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on 29-30 June 2009. However, innovation should be collaborative and involve resources inside and outside companies and institutions.

Sacha Wunsch-Vincent, economist at the OECD highlighted that ICT are a platform for innovation. The channelling of investment of ICTs in the OECD countries leads to a creation of jobs and wages “when people dig holes to put in fibres,” and to a second effect: the creation of demand for new ICT new products, which then creates a platform for innovation in other sectors.
