Private Members’ Bill introduces possible Canadian “iPod Tax”
A member of the Canadian parliament, Charlie Angus (New Democratic Party), introduced in March a private member’s bill through which he wants to introduce a change to the Canadian copyright legislation which would extend the current copyright levy to devices such as iPods. The Canadian copyright levy has been in place for more than 10 years and applies to blank media such as CDs. The initial levy increased the cost of blank recording media by a certain amount (depending on the type of media) to compensate creators for the possible copying of their works onto such media.
