A story about the marriage of two models often held to be unreconcilable: Open Source and proprietary Software. 

At the end of November 2010, Novell (a multinational US software and services corporation which primary focus is on developing open source software for enterprise clients) announced its acquisition by Attachmate Corp. In this transaction, Novell was separated into two distinct divisions. Through a sale of assets, 882 patents belonging to Novell were to be sold to the financial holding CPTN Holdings LLC. for $450 millions. CPTN Holding LLC is a consortium of technology companies (Oracle, Apple, EMC) led by Microsoft.
