No lobbying against Patent laws by Multinational Companies

The Economic Times reported on 20th August 2010 that the Health minister of New Delhi (Mr.Ghulam Nabi Azad) objected to recent lobbying attempts by global drugmakers to drastically change India's IP rules and restrain the ability of local pharmaceutical companies to make low-cost medicines.

The minister explained that he was “opposed to any move that seeks to extend the patent of medicines beyond 20 years” at a time where global drugmakers are seeking key changes such as a ‘legislative review’ of section 3 (d) of the Indian patent laws, data exclusivity and implementation of patent linkages.
