Microsoft loses $290 million patent appeal
The Canadian software company i4i recently won a US appeal against Microsoft over claims that the software giant had infringed a software patent awarded 10 years ago. We understand that the dispute was over a code integrated in Windows Word 2007 allowing customers to customize the software so that some of the data in documents could be more easily readable by machines. The court upheld an injunction against Microsoft requiring that the Seattle based giant remove the disputed code from their software products (Office 2007) before January 11, 2010. This decision ends a string of patent decisions favorable to Microsoft.
