Microsoft is reported to have closed a US$8.5bn deal for the internet phone service Skype, in a deal that has shocked analysts who think it would be a substantial overpayment for the company.

This deal raises several issues for Microsoft:

- Overpayment? Most analysts like the idea of the deal, but question whether Skype is worth the price.
