Let's Celebrate The Statute of Anne...and Rewind 300 Years !
Today we are celebrating an important anniversary! The Act for the Encouragement of Learning, by Vesting the Copies of Printed Books in the Authors or Purchasers of such Copies, During the Times therein mentioned (aka Statute of Anne) was enacted in 1709 and entered into force on 10 April 1710 (exactly 300 years ago!). Whereas certain point out that the statute very much served the publishers' interests, it was however the first statute in history to give rights directly to authors.
