Jail Time for a Canadian Movie “Pirate”
A Montreal man, Geremi Adam, was sentenced to serve two and a half months in prison for surreptitiously recording films from the back of local Montreal cinemas and then releasing the bootlegged videos to the world through the internet for a fee. Mr. Adam was arrested in 2006 at a downtime Montreal cinema while engaged in the process of recording Hollywood films. Given the circumstances, Mr. Adam pleaded guilty at trial to two counts of violating the Copyright Act at his trial and, in March, the Quebec Court sentenced him to serve jail time for his intentional violation of the Copyright Act.
