Indian Authors and Publishers Worried by New Copyright Bill

Indian authors and main publishers launched a national signature campaign against a proposed Copyright Amendment Bill 2010, which, they feared, could endanger their industry. They are worried that the amendment will remove restrictions on their territorial rights and allow easy import of cheaper and pirated versions of books. They feel in particular that the new legislation could put specially-priced Indian editions of foreign books under siege.

We understand the new bill to be originally intended to benefit the Indian movie industry. However, the legislation may be detrimental to Indian authors and publishers.
