Google Wins German Thumbnail Case
Google faced claims of copyright infringement in Germany for using thumbnails of protected works in its picture search engine. The plaintiff's (artist) name wasn’t disclosed in the case. She posted images of her works on her website in 2005 and a Google search with her name resulted in the display of thumbnail photos showing previews of her works. Upholding two lower court decisions, the German federal court of justice, the country's highest civil court, dismissed the action.
