Generic Drugs: Teva buys Ratopharm

German Ratiopharm, the second biggest generic medecine company got bought out by Israeli's and world biggest player in the field Teva Pharmaceutical. The price is a multiple of almost 12x Ratiopharm's 2009 earnings, showing confidence in Ratiopharm's future and earning capabilities.

Economies of scale are particularly important in the generic drug market where competitors cannot artificially inflate prices with legal monopolies.

It is interesting to note that Pfizer is under fire as the patent Lipitor (the blood cholesterol lowering drug and one of the most profitable drugs in the world contributing to 20% of Pfizer worldwide revenues) is about to expire in June 2011. [...]
