EU Commission Calls for Transparency on ACTA
Following a conference on Monday the EU Commission has promised to propose a motion calling for transparency regarding the secretive anti-counterfeiting trade agreement (ACTA) that have been negotiated for over two years with other trading partners (US, Japan, Canada). Some say that the EU should walk out from the negotiations if the process failed to be made public. We understand (without knowing for sure) that ACTA adopts a three strike approach similar to French law. This raises several issues regarding the international rule-making process. One of them is that a 'behind closed doors' approach may well exacerbate lobbying rather that avoid it altogether?
