Ars Technica explores the nitty gritty of P2P class actions in the US. Stressing that filing an individual lawsuit costs $350 filing fee per case before federal courts along with a new set of paperwork and an administrative nightmare , plaintiffs often prefer the RIAA route, i.e. simply filing mass lawsuits against groups of "John Does" (unidentified individuals) in some cases by the thousands.

However, ISPs and cable companies like Time Warner Cable challenge this strategy: “It is not evident from the complaint in this case that there is anything common to the 2,094 defendants that would justify joining them in a single litigation”. "Thus, if the plaintiff wants to sue [...]
