US Agrobusiness giant Monsanto is famous the world around for its aggressive stance on patenting genetically modified seeds. A few years ago the US Supreme Court allowed Monsanto to use its patents on seeds to prohibit farmers to use one year’s crop to plant next year’s one, a traditional and multi-millenary practice in the farming industry.

One new issue raised by the patenting of genetically modified plants and seeds has to do with globalization, free trade, exports and imports. This is this particular aspect that was addressed this week by the European Court of Justice in a landmark decision.
