The Digital Economy Bill to be Rushed Through Before the Elections?
Following up on BERD’s public consultation a few years ago and on intense lobbying on all sides, the Digital Economy Bill is now due for its second reading in the House of Commons. It is expected to be rushed through and become law before the forthcoming general election. Like in France the bill would allow persistent illegal file-sharers’ internet connection to be disconnected. Copyright holders would also be given the power to block access to websites hosting illegal content. The bill is controversial and some raise that its importance deserves a more detailed public debate. The BBC website explains in plain terms the new legislation in Q&A form.
