Defeat for SCO, Victory for Open Source
In a long-running dispute, a Salt Lake City jury ruled last week against SCO Group’s claim that it owned the copyright to Unix (a computer operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs). Whereas some legal questions still remain to be decided, this unanimous jury verdict will please Linux users. In a nutshell the theory behind "Open-source" is that software should be shared and available for anyone to make improvements/alterations. That is the basis of the Linux operating system that SCO was fighting against (claiming a 'classic' copyright in the program, e.g. the right oppose any unauthorized derivative works, etc.).
