Can Monkeys Own Copyright ?

By Sébastien ODDOS member of a.d.c.i. - Date : 2011-07-19 - Country : ETATS-UNIS - Subject : Economics - IP Field : Copyright & neighbouring rights

Who would associate copyright and monkeys? Are we talking of the copyright in Coco the Gorilla's paintings? No, this time the issue pointed out to us by our friend Brian Sites is to determine who owns the copyright in photographs that some monkeys took of themselves.

According to Techdirt an award winning nature photographer, David Slater, was in Indonesia in a national park. At some point, he left the camera unattended, and apparently a macaque monkey wandered over and took an hilarious self-portrait that can be seen HERE.
