Apple's in Top Patent Filing Companies

With 563 awarded in 2010, Apple confirms that it is currently one of the most innovative companies in the world.

This figure shows an increase in the number of patents compared with 2008 (186) and 2009 (289).

The mobile and IT industries top the rankings with Samsung (#2) with 4,551 patents, Microsoft with 3,094 patents, LG with 1,490 and Nokia 760 patents.

As pointed-out by Mobiledia, this focus on hard IP will probably means that we will soon see more patent lawsuits in this field. As a reminder of a trend that has already started, Apple recently accused HTC of infringing on 20 iPhone patents.
